Decide on the home icon – The home icon is more important in iPhone development than it is on web development because it the first thing that users see. It should be unique, simple but catching enough so users associate the icon with your app. There are many ways to design a personalized icon for the home screen, but the iPhone automatically adds rounded corners, a drop shadow and reflective shine which is pretty good already.

Hidden components – The Safari user interface components are unnecessary to be shown on the screen, so add this line to hide it.

Status bar – You can change the Status Bar on your website to a different appearance (default, black and black-transcluscent).

Default or black will set your content to be shown below the status bar, while black-transcluscent wil display content on the entire screen, but partially obscured by the status bar. This is the code to change it:

Startup image – You can display an image upon startup of your app while it loads. By default this is a screenshot of the web app’s last visited page (by the user) which is pretty nifty. But most iPhone developers would suggest customizing it for a professional look. Remember that it should be in PNG format and have 320 X 460 pixel dimensions in portrait orientation. If you want to change it, use this code:

These are a few quick tips for a web page that has been saved to the home screen and is loaded from there. If users access your website via Safari, then you can’t make these changes. However, it is the opinion of iPhone developers that if your app is strongly ajax-oriented, to just let users use the first page and add these customizations to make it very attractive. However, if you’re having trouble figuring any of these out, don’t hesitate to hire a reasonably priced professional iPhone developer that can help you figure these out in half the time.
